About organization

Scientific Centre for Aerospace Research of the Earth (CASRE) Institute of Geological Sciences of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

CASRE was created in 1992 by the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as an independent juridical person at the Institute of Geological Sciences of Ukraine.

Centre Staff is about 100 employees, including academician and corresponding-member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 6 doctors and 22 candidates of science.

Organizational CASRE consists of five departments:

CASRE Director - Vadim I. Lyalko , National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The Centre specializes in collecting, processing and thematic interpretation of aerospace images and preparation of various GIS products. Studies in Energy-geosystems and their impact on physical, chemical and biological mechanisms responsible for the spectral response of remote sensing of natural objects. Developed model of generalized spectral portraits of natural objects and formations established and valued relationships with their characteristics and properties of the environment. On the basis of spectral models, new methods and technology solutions to various thematic tasks in remote sensing for agriculture, finding minerals, prediction and prevention of emergencies and others.

The studies are fundamentally applied in nature.

CASRE conducts research in such key areas:

  1. Assessment and management of natural resources:
    • Detail of the geological structure of the territories (the study of active exogenous processes, detection and localization of active fault zones);
    • Assessment areas and shelf areas to find oil and gas;
    • Determination of soil moisture and groundwater level, water storage search;
    • Assessment and mapping of forest lands.
  2. Environmental monitoring of the environment:
    • Assessment of sea areas and inland water bodies (rapid detection of oil spill on the surface, evaluation of ecological and sanitary conditions of water in the water, industrial pollution detection, monitoring of suspended matter and algae, etc.);
    • Detection and monitoring of leaks from oil, gas, water supply and hot water supply systems;
    • Operational monitoring floods, swamping, forest fires and other natural disasters;
    • Evaluation of the areas contaminated by heavy metals, radionuclides, pesticides and other toxic substances;
    • The study of metropolitan areas (dynamics of development and city building, the anthropogenic impact of industry on the environment).
  3. Application of remote sensing in agriculture:
    • Inventory of crops;
    • Assessment of agriculture (phenological observations, supply to crops fertilizer and water, determination of biomass and productivity);
    • Yield prediction.
  4. Theoretical study and evaluation of the effectiveness of remote sensing methods and technologies based on systems analysis:
    • Formation of optimal board structure aerospace facilities to meet the challenges of remote sensing;
    • Evaluation of airborne and ground aerospace remote sensing systems.
  5. Information and software for the RS:
    • application of GIS technologies in remote sensing;
    • algorithmic development for the automatic interpretation of multispectral aerospace images to address topical problems of remote sensing;
    • scientific basis and the harmonization of conceptual and normative base in the remote sensing field.

Centre is recognized by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and National Space Agency of Ukraine, the main organization of the complex development of scientific and methodological bases for aerospace sensing survey of natural resources and environmental monitoring. In this scientific center works directly with other local agencies and organizations.

CASRE - the first scientific organization in Ukraine, adopted by the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL). The Centre has developed international contacts and cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA), space agencies of Germany (DLR), France (CNES), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), as well as many other foreign institutions and organizations.
